Then suddenly I learned that many, even those who have caught a hippie himself and hitchhiked, and wore long hair and talked about peace and non-resistance to evil - well, once, long ago, of course, but it was. And now, even they know nothing about the origin of the pacifist sign. Let me tell you in a few words. However, it seemed to me that I have this story just from the mid-eighties you know... but okay:-) The pacifist was invented by Gerald Holtom (I don't know if I transcribed it correctly, in English it's spelled like this: Gerald Holtom)-a Briton, an artist who graduated from the Royal College of art, a pacifist and conscientious objector during world war II and all that stuff. He drew it in 1958 for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament - and abbreviated ND). It is based on the letters N and D in the flag semaphore code. It is even said many times that he was inspired by the farmer on "execution of the rebels" Goya, got divorced and desperate hands, but I don't know... there are in fact the most striking character is you remember is a young bright spot, standing with hands up - not in despair, but quite the opposite - in a fit of rage soon... But, again, it does not matter - they still all because in a minute kill and those who are desperate and those who are furious. Painted and painted. With a semaphore-too it is very good. And the symbol was then adopted by the "Union of students of the United States for peace" in the early sixties, and then - went on. A variety of hippies and all of us, idiots with pacifics, I will not publish: the students of the state, when they fought against the Vietnam war, you have seen enough. Here's a sketch of Gerald and how the letters N and D look in a flag semaphore.
